Kathy Acker is a prominent contemporary feminist (I would argue) writer. On the most recent re-printings of her novels, published by Grove Wiedenfeld Press, each cover presents a different photo of Acker, each showing a different view of the large tattoo across her shoulder and back. Cf. also the long interview with Acker in Angry Women (RE/Search Press) wherein she attempts to articulate the relationship between tattooing one's self and establishing identity.
