In his seminal work, The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge, Jean-François Lyotard clearly attacks and undermines those overarching structures which he calls metanarratives--"the progressive emancipation of reason and freedom,"..."the enrichment of all humanity through the progress of capitalist technoscience" et cetera (Explained 17). In later works, The Postmodern Explained, for example, he backs off a bit from his earlier position, though he still believes that these "grand narratives of legitimation" are, or should be, "in decline" (19).
