The task, then, is to transfer the DJ method to the computer classroom, where hypertextual interlinking allows the method to take place. Pedagogical enthusiasm for hypertext often remains unable to conceptualize the collection methodology (how to assemble content) and juxtaposition-styled practice (how to interlink disparate ideas and personal insight) academic hypertextual writing can create. Instead, focus tends to remain on non-linearity (allow various narratological approaches to be developed), extended annotation (complex bibliographies which use links for commentary) or professional writing (how to design a company website or put a resume online). DJ writing, then, alters this perception by asking composition studies to teach the mix. Because of its familiarity (most students know about hip hop even if their tastes drift elsewhere) and similarity to hypertextual composition (juxtaposition and linking), I propose the DJ method as the beginning for student work in a new composition studies program that appends to our traditional teaching this new media practice.
